Unlocking New Frontiers in Malaria Research: BPRC Embraces FluidFM OMNIUM

As we make strides in infectious disease research, recently, two of our scientists took an exciting leap forward with the installation of a FluidFM OMNIUM platform. A key milestone in our work to understand and combat malaria.

The FluidFM OMNIUM platform delivered and installed by Cytosurge is a state of the art system that will help us to unlock new insights that can help us combatting malaria. We hope to be able to inject liver cells (including parasites), take biopsies for analysis, move cells/parasites and perhaps more. We initially want to use it to investigate why some parasites 'remain dormant' in the liver cell, while other parasites continue to grow; which is important information to ultimately develop new therapies.

Focus on Hypnozoites and Host Interactions

BPRC’s research focuses on the elusive, dormant liver stages of malaria parasites known as hypnozoites and on how malaria parasites interact with host cells. These parasites can cause relapsing malaria, where patients experience repeated episodes long after the initial infection. “Our ultimate goal is to develop a cure for people carrying these dormant parasites and to prevent relapses,” the scientists explain. Their innovative assays, which have replaced monkeys to a large extent, have already pinpointed promising compounds that could potentially prevent malaria infections from taking hold.

Leveraging FluidFM OMNIUM for Precision Research

“We’re interested in understanding the basic biology of hypnozoites and how the host environment influences the dormancy and reactivation of these parasites. By understanding these interactions, we aim to find new ways to disrupt the parasite’s ability to hide and reemerge.”

The recent installation of a FluidFM OMNIUM represents a new chapter for their research. “The platform’s versatility really stood out to us. It will allow us to perform precise microinjections, extractions, and even subsequent, Live-seq—all critical for studying the complex dynamics of host-parasite interactions.” Furthermore, the in vitro experimentation enabled by the miniaturized scale of the FluidFM OMNIUM is expected to further reduce and refine the use of animals in experimentation.

Installation and Training: A Collaborative Success

The training for the platform has now successfully taken place, equipping the BPRC researchers with the skills needed to leverage the full potential of the FluidFM OMNIUM in their groundbreaking research.

But the excitement isn’t just about the capabilities of the technology—it’s also about the collaborative support system they’ve found in Cytosurge. As new users, they are already benefiting from the training and support that comes with integrating the FluidFM OMNIUM into their lab. “The resources Cytosurge provides, like their online protocols and tips, are incredibly useful. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We can build on the work that’s already been done and focus on pushing our research further. We’re confident we can hit the ground running."

Building Momentum at the FluidFM Conference

Their recent visit to the FluidFM Conference only amplified their enthusiasm. “The conference was fantastic for connecting with experienced researchers from diverse fields,” they recall. “The open, collaborative atmosphere was inspiring. Everyone was so willing to share their experiences and insights, which made us feel more confident about the journey we’re about to embark on.”

“We feel like we’ve come on board at just the right time. FluidFM is well-developed but still evolving, and we’re thrilled to be part of that evolution. The spirit of discovery is very much alive for us.”
