Post-doctoral researcher (early career stage)

BPRC is an independent not-for-profit research institute contributing to the development of new therapies for life-threatening human diseases and alternatives for animal experiments. At our website we provide more information on our areas of interest and our science approaches.

Within BPRC's parasitology department we have a job opening for a fulltime

Post-doctoral researcher (early career stage)

Are you a team-oriented early career post-doc with an interest in molecular-cell biology and (malaria) infection biology? Would you like to work in a multidisciplinary team on a highly collaborative project? Join BPRC and work towards understanding the mechanisms of malaria parasite transmission and develop new in vitro tools that reduce animal experimentation.

The project

Plasmodium vivax is the major cause of malaria outside Africa. It has several biological features that enable its survival, among which a unique transmission biology. In this collaborative ZonMW-funded project between Radboud University (Nijmegen) and BPRC (Rijswijk), we will address the (molecular) biology of vivax-type transmissible stages (gametocytes) using the more accessible model parasite Plasmodium cynomolgi, to assist in much needed intervention strategies that block transmission and thus prevent malaria.

What you’ll be working on

You will develop protocols to isolate P. cynomolgi gametocytes for ‘omics’ approaches and employ advanced genetic modification to functionally analyze genes involved in gametocyte biology, to ultimately improve our in vitro models for malaria.
Together, our approaches will overcome critical knowledge gaps in the gametocyte biology of vivax-type malaria parasites and will provide new tools to further explore the biology of these parasites through the entire lifecycle.

What we have to offer

An independent and versatile position (3.5 years on a full-time basis) in a challenging environment with a diversity of great colleagues.
